Day 125: Forest Law
"In revenge for irrational wild animals, which ought by natural law to be available to all in common, he [Henry II] had either punished by death or cruelly mutilated in their limbs human beings, who employ reason, are saved by the same blood of Christ and share the same nature in equality."
(Quoted in England Under the Norman and Angevin Kings.)
The forest law of England was truly horrific, not just the stuff of Robin Hood legend.
